Climb the sherpa stairs and see the Devil’s gate
A hike to do when in Svolvær, get close to Svolværgeita (Svolvær goat) and Djevelporten (the Devil’s gate). You may climb to Fløya, the highest point.
Svolvær
After walking from Å to Svolvær, I reached my final destination on this trip. So now, there will be a few day trips from here.
- Henningsvær
- Svolværgeita and Djevelporten
- Trollfjorden
Svolværgeita (The Svolvær goat)
Svolværgeita (the Svolvaer goat) is a rock formation on the mountainside overlooking Svolvær. It can give you the impression with a good imagination that it looks like a goat from certain angles. It is very popular with climbers, which I am not, but it is still lovely to look at from a distance. I saw at least three climbers when I did my hike, and one of them did the jump from one “horn” to the other one.
The Sherpas has made a nice stairs Djeveltrappa (the Devils stairs), that starts a little to the left of the chapel. Therefore, the first 20 minutes is quite easy. After that, you have to concentrate a bit more. After some very easy climbing, you get up to where it flattens out a bit, and then you are almost on the same level as the base of the goat. I did not go any closer, so I hiked further upwards, and I had to walk through some snow.
Djevelporten (The Devil’s gate)
It probably takes another 30 minutes to reach the spot where you see Djevelporten. This is a large rock stuck in the gorge between to mountain walls. This is a very popular Instagram spot, but you should be careful, and not make a mistake step, it is very far down. Since I was there all by myself, I missed out on making my Instagram fame.
