Masai Mara was a fantastic wildlife experience
After the fantastic experience of climbing the Kilimanjaro with Hvitserk, we were heading for Kenya and a safari in Masai Mara. We had left Tanzania by airplane via Nairobi. And from there, we flow two small planes in and land on the gravel track as a landing strip.
The hosts from the Eagle View Camp picked us up with safari jeeps. And quite immediately, we were introduced to the wildlife we were surrounded by.
Masai Mara
Masai Mara comes from the Masai people who live in this area and herd their livestock and the river Mara. The staff in the camp and the guards around are Masai. The Masai people love red material in their clothes; therefore easily recognized. The wildlife can cross between Masai Mara and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania without borders.
I can not impress you with the best nature pictures, but I hope you will get an impression of the greatness we experience. Here are some of the animals we saw Elephants, Hippos, Buffalos, Zebras, Giraffes, Lions, Hyenas, and several types of Antelopes.
While driving around in the safari jeep, we witnessed all the animals, and we came close to the lions lying in the grass, ignoring us. At one point, the guide became very excited. He pointed out some Zebras that had walked into a trap with a foal. Then he showed us the lions lurking up in the hills above. He said they would attack the foal. We were sitting in the jeep for more than 30 minutes and waiting, we could not see the zebras anymore, but we could still see the lions between the bushes. Suddenly we saw many lions running award where the zebras were, and we heard terrible screaming, and we saw the big zebras running away.
The guide drove the jeep to where the lions had their feast. By now, it had become dark, but we found the spot and used a red light that did not disturb the lions. I will not say that watching a killing of an animal interests me, but to see how the lions cooperate and lurk in the bushes while preparing to attack was fascinating. And we all know this is the way of the animal world.
The camp in Masai Mara
Eagle View Camp was a fantastic place. Here we were served the best local food, so tasty and well prepared. The “tents” was also so impressive. It had a wooden floor and everything else you wished for in a hotel room. However, the roof and walls of tent material, where you could keep the net walls open to watch the view from waking up in the morning till sunset—seeing animals grassing on the savanna. It must be so romantic to share this with someone special.
In a Masai village
We did something very touristic like visiting a Masai village. Here you had a town made out of a vast circle of 43 houses of clay. We also got a glimpse inside their homes that were without electricity. No doubt this was how they used to live, but I think their homes are outside this village today. However, it was interesting to see when the men and women came out singing and dancing. The most characteristic of their dance is that the men jump up very high in the air. Supposedly, the higher you could jump, the better your chance with the girls.
In conclusion, the safari was a fantastic experience. I would love to go on safari in Africa again, and I will probably find another destination next time. However, I would not mind going back, especially if I could see the great annual migration of the animals.
Love your travel story. Inspiring me to travel abroad again
Thank you, JB; nice to hear!
