Alone on Horseid Beach, Lofoten: No WiFi, No People, Just Midnight Sun

On my second night in Lofoten, I took the boat from Reine and hiked over to Horseid Beach, where I got to see the magical midnight sun. I spent the evening and night on Horseid beach in complete solitude. No wifi, just seeing some birds flying. It was so peaceful.

First glimpse of Horseid Beach. This is where you stop… and pretend the hike was easy.

The boat from Reine to Kirkefjorden runs twice a day. That day, I was the only passenger. According to the captain, I was the third visitor that season. Not exactly overcrowded. The boat takes you to the tiny village of Kirkefjorden.

From Kirkefjorden, you hike over a ridge to reach the beach.
There was still snow at the top, which made the whole “easy hike” situation slightly more creative than expected.
It took about two hours, including a bit of route improvisation.

Worth it.

Midnight sun, one tent, and absolutely nobody else. Perfect… probably.

The beach

Horseid Beach doesn’t feel like Norway.
It feels like someone dropped a desert between mountains and forgot about it.

The dunes stretch far inland, and for a moment I actually wondered if I had taken a wrong turn and ended up in some Scandinavian version of the Sahara.

Eventually, the ocean appeared.

Mountains on three sides.
Open sea in front.
And absolutely nobody else.

It’s one of those places that makes you feel small in a good way.
Not existential crisis small. Just… properly calibrated.

The midnight sun didn’t help either. It turns time into something vague and optional.

I stayed the night.

A beach that feels slightly misplaced in Norway. I didn’t question it.

You can do this as a day trip from Reine.
But if you have the gear and a tolerance for silence, staying overnight is the better choice.

The next morning, I left early to catch the first boat back.

Halfway up the ridge, I stopped for a warm breakfast.
Behind me: the beach I had just had all to myself.
Ahead: civilization, slowly coming back into focus.

The boat also stops at Vindstad, from where you can hike to Bunes Beach.

That will have to wait.

Some places you don’t rush back to.
Horseid Beach is one of those.
